Verify a bank before holding or sending purchase funds
Separate bank identity, deposit insurance, account ownership and authenticated closing instructions.

What matters before you decide
Check the institution through an official registry before trusting a bank-looking website. FDIC BankFind can identify insured banks and official websites. That does not authenticate an email, insure every financial product or verify the receiving account for a particular wire: these are separate checks before sending purchase funds.
- Identify the actual depository.
- Match registry and official website.
- Check account and product separately.
Match the legal institution and website
The FDIC FAQ describes BankFind details including operating status and official websites. Record name, identifier, result and date, then obtain contacts from the verified website. Similar names or a copied logo are not a match. A lender, payment app, broker and depository bank can have different roles; ask which institution actually holds the deposit and where you can read the account terms.
Check the specific account and product
Use current FDIC coverage information to ask about the deposit, ownership category and other balances at the same institution. Do not assume every investment is an insured deposit. For a credit union use its appropriate insurance and supervisory information; absence from a bank registry is not proof of fraud. Keep your institution identity check distinct from assessment of personal deposit coverage.
Verify the final destination independently
Before closing payment, compare recipient and instructions with the settlement professional through an independently established contact. A legitimate bank name in a message does not authenticate its receiving account. Stop to reconcile an unexpected change before sending money. Keep evidence securely and never place account numbers, signatures or payment instructions in a public worksheet. This method cannot guarantee prevention of every fraud.
A genuine bank name, unverified instructions
An email names an insured bank but changes the closing account. Treat the registry match and new instructions as separate checks and contact the established settlement professional before acting.
